Operational Objectives
In 1984 the Alemachen moved to a newly built house in Gulele. The management of Alemachen formulated the following policy:
Short term: Providing free treatment and full board for physically handicapped children. The children are admitted during the time of their treatment and will all go back to their families after. Alemachen will organize realistic treatment mainly in orthopedic- and plastic surgery in recognized hospitals and clinics in Addis Ababa, to improve the children’s functionality, mobility, and appearance. No medical activities are undertaken in Alemachen itself.
Long term: through medical interventions, the child will gain its fullest possible social integration. The aim of the Alemachen program is to provide physical rehabilitation, self-confidence, and self- reliance, which is the basis for socio-economic rehabilitation: the children will have better chances in life.
Target Group: physically disabled children between the ages of 5 and 12 years from poor families whose lives can be improved by realistic and in Ethiopia available treatment. They can stay in Alemachen until they finished their treatment.
Alemachen has a capacity of 40 children (20 girls and 20 boys). About 200 children are passing through the house every year. Many are newcomers but others are repeaters who come for new braces and shoes and/or follow up treatment.
A person known to the family and living in Addis Ababa is encouraged to become the child’s guarantor. This person reunites the child with its family after discharge and becomes responsible for future follow-up appointments.
For easy administrative-reference, every child gets an index-number. A pediatrician makes routine medical examinations and refers the child to the relevant hospitals or clinics. All the medical and social findings are kept in a filing system.
- Alemachen Major Achievements And Lessons Learned in Caring Disabled Children
- Major Achievements:
According to our document in the last 45 years from 1972 -2017 Alemachen has facilitated and provided rehabilitation care for 3,795 receiving the first girl dated September 20, 1975, and up to May 20, 2023. For example, in the last eight years (from 1975 to 2019) Alemachen has facilitated and provided rehabilitation care for 3795 disabled children from poor families from all regions of Ethiopia. Almost all of the children have got rehabilitative care and reintegrated back to families and started a normal life. The major causes of disabilities are clubfeet, burn-contractures, limb-deformities/congenital, neglected fractures, post-polio paralysis, amputees, osteomyelitis, Bone TB, and harelip/cleft palate, and others. If Alemachen was not providing the rehabilitation services, little or none of the children would get the rehabilitation care and start a normal life.
Summary of disabled children got care at Alemachen Convalescent Home for Disabled Children from 2008 to 2015.
